Free Demo Classes - Music Together Mixed Ages
Thank you for your interest in Music Together! The Mixed Ages class is the essential Music Together class, one that a child can attend from birth through age five. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers, grouping children of a variety of ages in one class. This approach fosters natural, family-style learning where younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together.
Each child participates at his or her own developmental level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, observing, or exploring musical instruments. We welcome the whole family to join in this important family music experience, and any caregiver—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the child(ren) to class. There are no strings attached for attending this Demo Class, and you will not be expected to register or pay for anything. We hope that you'll get a sense of how Music Together provides an important component of early childhood learning, and we do our best to make sure everyone has fun!
Here are some guidelines to keep in mind to have a great demo class experience!
- Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes before class begins so that you and your child will have plenty of time to remove coats and shoes, etc, and get settled before class begins.
- Wear clothing that is comfortable to move around in. We do not wear shoes during class, so wear socks if you prefer not to go barefoot.
- Please do not bring your child's toys or instruments from home.
- Please do not bring food into the classroom. Water in enclosed containers is fine.
- It is perfectly fine to nurse little ones in the classroom. You may want to move outside the circle to nurse to avoid being danced upon.
Music Together supports every child's learning style. Kinesthetic learners may prefer to wander about and explore the room during class. This is developmentally appropriate for many toddlers, and we encourage you to allow your child to move about freely, even if everyone else is sitting still! Children with a more visual or aural learning style may sit still and quiet through their first few classes without visibly participating. This more *passive* participation is also an important component of learning!
If your child has had a hard morning or feels overwhelmed by the sound level, he may cry at the first class. If this happens, we urge you to stay! To help your child feel safe, you can sit to the side or just outside the open door of the classroom. Over time, your child will relax and start to enter the circle, but give your child time. Often, it'll take a few songs for your child to approach the circle, and occasionally, for some little ones, it'll take several classes to get to that comfort level.
The most important way to encourage your child's participation is through joyfully participating yourself. It is not unusual for children to need 3 or 4 weeks of classes to adapt to the new setting and routine. Please keep your expectations relaxed and just come ready to have fun!
